Stack v2.2 'release candidate' for iPhone 3.0

I held Stack 2.2 (my final release) for the launch of 3.0 as it made sense to make sure it still ran on the newer firmware (as I won't be able to update it from now on). Without further ado, I direct you to my 'new' Stack website!

http://www.steventroughtonsmith.com/stack/

Hope this helps out all those who've been missing Stack and/or yearning for the cool new stuff in version 2.2.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
• Should work on iPhone OS 2.0 all the way up to 3.0.
• Has issues on 3.0 as regards showing on top of videos (there's a technical reason for this, they removed something I was checking for in 2.x which allowed me to fade out when not at SpringBoard. Will try and find a workaround for 3.0)
• Is not available in Cydia. This is a Terminal-only install, for political reasons. Sorry if it makes things difficult.
• This is still a prerelease binary - there are some bugs. Let me know about them in the usual ways (email, Twitter)
• As always, any of those Extended Preferences-alike mods will likely prevent Stack from showing in Settings

NEW IN STACK v2.2:
• Custom positioning - drag the Stack to reposition it horizontally
• Display mode: image (customizable), single-icon, or cascaded icons (3 icons)
• Optional Item-removal prompt
• Grid View theming (Grid View images are fully modifiable)
• Much-improved performance and memory usage

How do u install this. Please I tried everything!!!!!

I followed your first step the file from first putting file in /root then going to terminal and I had to find this by me self considering there were no tutorials :(

I did

1) su root
2) alpine
3) cd /
4) dpkg -i stack2_2.deb

After that it did install. Then I did not get the second part "enabling"

"You'll need to enable the Preferences Bundle after installing Stack. Use:

'/Library/MobileStack/InstallHelper --installPrefBundle'"

How do I enter in that code /library etc?
I tried putting that exactly into my Itouch terminal and it wouldnt work just shows "no such file or directory"

Please if you can post a tutorial or email me them at VSaharya@gmail.com .

I will be very very grateful. Because I love stack And Ive been trying to figure this out all day. Thanks alot in advance.

is it possible to change the stack grid background?

I agree with the post above, it is a bit unclear. Could you post a tutorial on how to install it? With the Preferences Bundle afterwards?

Hi just got this installed, and its working great! Just a quick question though, I find it hard to move the stack to the position I want it to, I mean to trigger it, not the actual moving, then set it in position. Is there a particular gesture or button press required?

how did you install this!?! specifically the second part :You'll need to enable the Preferences Bundle after installing Stack. Use:

'/Library/MobileStack/InstallHelper --installPrefBundle'

Van said...

Yea, The second part I did not understand at all. Considering it gave a directory error.

But everyone, he has said its not really for the general public yet and is very buggy on the 3.0. So I guess he wants us to wait a while.

Anonymous said...

this isn't going to be released on cydia so there's no point in waiting cause he's not going to update this anymore

A good step by step manual would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for updating this.

Regarding the political decision, I think you should include it in a repo, since this will cause more trouble for you.

You'll probably be flooded with HELP! messages on twitter, e-mail and your blog.

Just an idea.

Ok its me again. I used a different code and got the stack "installed." Thing is Stacks shows up on my Settings section Showing
1) Warn On Remove
2) Always show in grid
3) Use curved Stack
4) Display as.

I played around with all the options, and still I dont see a Icon for Stacks....

Could it be because I have a 5 Column springboard? Could that be interfering with stacks?

Steven Troughton-Smith said...

@ Van did you ReSpring / Reboot?

I haven't tested it with any other third party hacks

Havent figured out the preferences part but got it installed this way:

just take the deb file and put it here : var/root/media/Cydia/Autoinstall

than restart AND respring.

I am able to move stacks around the dock.

Not sure how to do the preferences part and any help on that would be appreciated. Step by step guide would be great!

Finally just wanted to give a HUGE THANKS to Steven for updating this app. I would gladly pay for this as it is one of my favorite apps! Keep up the great work!

Van said...

I Did respring and reboot. No luck.

Oh and steven, I think on your main site, you should let ppl know the codes

"Su root
Alpine
etc etc etc"

Otherwise I was REALLY close to get the stack, it came under my settings page but no actual icon or anything appeared even after me playing around with the options and rebooting etc.

@Van watch this space, I'm trying to get it into Cydia to make things easier for people.

Thanks so much steven :-D

I tried installing this on my FW 2.2 ipod touch but I constantly keep going into safe mode after every restart. It says so on you're blog that Stack should work on FW 2.0 and above

Steven Troughton-Smith said...

@Gollyzila99 shouldn't have issues on 2.x, I made sure to determine OS version and only load the 3.0 stuff on 3.0.

Got any logs?

Van said...

Steven, will you be posting your Stacks app in a certain repo? Or just straight in cydia sections?

Sek33 said...

Thx for Stack v2.2 Steve. I've follow the instructions you've done, and it work perfectly. I've stacks options on Settings.app.
Thx again!!

Sek33 said...

I've tested the Stack updated version, and the wiggle work, but moving Stack on Dock isn't very precise... I prefer before

Mun said...

Managed to get it installed fairly easily using WinSCP to transfer the files and Putty to execute the commands.

Had some trouble with the icon getting stuck wiggling though. The only way to get around this was to power off, and back on, go into settings and then change the icon to single (from cascaded), which seemed to help.

Also, the stack icon seems to be slow to hide itself when an application is launched, and often ends up sitting on top of the screen for a few seconds, which doesn't seem right.

(This is the first time I'm using Stack, but checked out a couple of videos on Youtube of older versions, and they don't seem to exhibit this behavior).

Installation:
1. SSH the file to your iPhone and place it in /var/mobile/
2. Run “MobileTerminal” (in Cydia) and enter these commands:
su root
alpine
dpkg -i stack2_2.deb
3. Now enable the bundle preferences typing this string:
/Library/MobileStack/InstallHelper –installPrefBundle
Enjoy the application and full customization through the Settings. If you want to uninstall it you just open Cydia, go to packages look for Stack and click “Uninstall.”

@Steven Troughton Smith: I got it to work first try, so that was pretty cool.
The only problem with it is that it doesn't disappear immediately when you open an app - it hangs around until the app finishes loading, and then it disappears.
Also, it doesn't hide when you use Categories. Other than that, it's perfect. Except I sort of like the previous hide icon better :(

SWEEEETTT EVERYONE!!!!!!
I HAVE FIGURED OUT HOW TO GET STACK BY MY SELF. I EVEN HAVE 5 COLUMN SPRINGBOARD, WITH 5 ICON DOCK, WITH MOVING WALLPAPER, SBsettings. SO NOTHING INTERFERES WITH THE INSTALLATION OF STACK.

- EVERY 1 WHO CANT SEEM TO GET THIS, LOOK HERE. READ ALL OF IT. ESPECIALLY THE END.

DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS FOR EVERY
ONE
1) Go Get OpenSSH and Terminal From Cydia.

2) Get a SSH Program. I suggest WINSCP.
Host Name : [Is your ip]
UserName : Root
Password : Alpine.

3)Go to http://www.steventroughtonsmith.com/stack/

And Download the .DEB File

4) SSH Into your Itouch.

5) Go to /private/var/mobile

6) Place .deb file inside mobile folder.

7)Go to terminal on itouch.

8) ENTER THESE LINES EXACTLY

su root
alpine
dpkg -i stack2_2.deb

**[AFTER LAST OF THOSE 3 LINES, IT WILL SHOW TONS OF CODES, MEANS ITS INSTALLING]**

[NOW ENTER THIS CODE IN, RIGHT AFTER THE CODES HAVE STOPPED]

/Library/MobileStack/InstallHelper --installPrefBundle

[THEN RESPRING]

IF THAT DOES NOT WORK, EVEN AFTER YOU RESPRING OR REBOOT, GO BACK TO WINSCP AND SSH INTO ITOUCH AND GO TO /private/var/mobile AGAIN. AND RIGHT CLICK THE STACK2_2.DEB FILE GO DOWN AND FIND "ENTER" AND CLICK IT.

IT WILL SHOW A BLANK LINE, AND SOME THINGS TO CLICK UNDER.

IN THAT BLANK LIKE TYPE

/Library/MobileStack/InstallHelper --installPrefBundle

AND DO NOT CLICK ANYTHING ELSE, JUST TYPE THAT CODE IN AND PRESS OK, AND WHAT EVER ERRORish/message it gives you PRESS OK.
NOW REBOOT YOUR ITOUCH. AND YOU SHOULD NOW HAVE STACK ON THE LEFT SIDE OF YOUR DOCK.

ENJOY. IT TOOK ME LIKE 5 HOURS TO FIGURE THIS OUT BY MY SELF.

And Steven, Hopefully people get off your back now :]

Hope I helped :D

Hey, just wanted to say that I'm very glad to see a 3.0 update for Stacks... I was worried that I would lose it forever when I upgraded since you had said you were discontinuing support for it. Plus all the new features are nicee :D

The only question I have is if there is any way to theme the stack icon that appears when you set "Display As" to "Image"? The default is nice normally, but I when using some themes it's very out of place :P

Steven Troughton-Smith said...

@Erik theming is easy to do, all the files are in /Library/MobileStack and you can replace images as you like. Some people already have themed it:

Oh boy, as it's a Terminal only install, I assume if I don't have a Mac, I can't install it?

ngyn13 said...

where do you download it? I cant seem to find it any where.

Max said...

Any luck on getting it to Cydia? I have already donated and received the alpha version, but that was before I updated to 3.0, so I am a little fearful of installing it, any way I could get the latest build?
